Announced by the juicy new single "Kingdom" (for which we can show you exclusively the official video above) the new Dave Gahan album "Hourglass" promises to be quite a revelation. More electronic than his 2003 solo-debut "Paper Monsters" it will appeal a lot more to the Depeche Mode fans. Out on 22nd October, "Hourglass" is presented as a limited edition standard CD (basically a digipak version that will revert to a jewel case once sold-out) alongside a real limited deluxe edition including a bonus 45 minute DVD featuring a short film, video, studio sessions and much more. And, collectors behold, there will also be a special LP vinyl + CD version of "Hourglass". We will soon reveal full details on these versions. First out on October 8th is the single "Kingdom" which comes presented in three different formats (+ the non-album track "Tomorrow") including a 2 track single plus limited remix maxi and picture vinyl. Kingdom remixes reviewed

Here is Home’s review of the remixes coming out on Dave Gahan’s new single “Kingdom”. A few familiar remixers return while some new ones get their chance to remix.

Kingdom (Booka Shade Club Remix)

Before I start, I have to confess that I am a massive fan of Booka Shade, so my review will definitely be skewed to the positive, though I will try to stay as neutral as I can. That being said, I’m happy to report that their remix for “Kingdom” is brilliant. If you liked their remix for Depeche Mode’s “Martyr”, then you won’t be let down. Like you would expect from them, the production level is again top quality. They go a little darker on this one than they did on Martyr. I think the song defiantly lends itself to that anyway, but they really do capture that emotion here. One of the things that really sticks out to me are the haunting synth lines that float around in the background while the overall tone of the mix has their signature electro groove. Is minimal and funky possible at the same time? Well, it might be here. Another thing that stands out are the fun old school style “claps” they drop in every once in a while. It’s kind of a throw back to how songs were remixed in the late 80’s…. maybe a nod to that sound if not anything. They have this amazing ability to remix a track, but not overpower it. They have proved once again that they have figured out the perfect formula to blend together their sound and the sound of the original song in a way to respect the original, while at the same time explore what the song could be. The remix is pretty laid back for what some people might consider to be a club mix, though it could work well in a club as well.


Kingdom (Booka Shade Dub)

The dub remix they did for Kingdom is funkier and not as dark as the Club Mix. It is a little warmer and the beat has some added percussion that really brightens up the mix. Like their dub for Martyr, this one has tons of “sounds” from the original used all through it. They also use a lot more of the vocals this time that were absent on the Martyr dub. This one has a lot of cool winding synths all through it with tons of little interesting sounds and vocals dropping in and out to give it some depth and atmosphere. It also has lots of great build-ups and breaks to really make an impact on the listener. While the world is starting to tire of some of the “minimal” and “electro” electronic music that has started to over saturate the clubs, they are able to redefine it while maintaining the ethic. It’s part of their genius and why they will have a very long career. While this one is geared more for the clubs, it doesn’t mean it’s faceless and uninspired.


Kingdom (10K10 Extended Remix)

You wanted it and you got it! I know this is what a lot of fans have been waiting for… a classic extended version! There is no better description for it than that. To be honest, it’s a little better then the original because it was beefed up some. An edit of this would have been perfect as the single version! Not to take anything away from the original, they’re very similar really, this just has a little more punch to it. While 10K10 did drop in some minor cut up, gritty drops here and there, it’s the closest thing to a classic extended version I have heard in…. well I don’t know how long. The parts were mixed together perfect and it seems like it was built around that hypnotic bass line. Another amazing Gahan vocal and I just know people are going to love it. For all of you longing for this style of remix, start getting excited! You won’t be let down.


Kingdom (Digitalism Remix)

This remix comes right out and immediately demands your attention! There is a very glaring and aggressive synth sound that will raise an eyebrow, as the beat, a deeper beat then I was expecting, kicks right in. I will say that this mix is way more accessible than their remix for “Never Let Me Down Again”, so give it a chance if that remix wasn’t your cup of tea. The remix really reminds me of their album “Idealism” as it kind of bounces around in sound a bit. Some parts harder, some parts more fun and poppy. It really is a blend of their overall sound unlike the Never Let Me Down Again remix that people either loved or hated. There really wasn’t a middle ground on the reaction to that one. This time all the vocals are used and Dave’s voice lies really well on top of their gritty, and twisted sound. There is this fun synth sound that they have looped that runs through most of the mix which really takes the edge off the harder parts. While this mix won’t be for everyone, I can see it getting a lot of play in the clubs! They must like it; they are performing it live on tour right now!
