Depeche Mode has played the signature tunes of the 80s, which are timeless
tremendous and successful to this day. Keyboardist Andrew Fletcher takes
part right from the start.

In contrast to his colleagues Dave Gahan and Martin Gore the 43-year-old
hasn't released a solo album meanwhile, but has found his own label in
return.

It's called "Toast Hawaii" and exploits mainly the pop duo Client. Apart
from that Andrew Fletcher roams through the world's clubs as a DJ recently.
On Saturday he will spin in the Kranhalle at the event series "Electronic
Open". (Hansastr. 39, 10 p.m.)

Five jobs

"I'm pretty busy. We're just recording Client's new single. Then I fly to
Barcelona, then to Geneva. I've got five jobs simultaneously. One of them is
DJing. Actually it's rather a hobby. I see it as a sideline to Depeche Mode
and I'm enjoying it more and more.

One and a half year ago I did it for the first time for Client, since then
my set develops constantly. I'm not really a beat-DJ but a song-based
spinner above all, who's interested in melodies and structures: in a kind of
classic, electronic music from the eighties, but also fresh things and some
strange Depeche Mode mixes.

The old stuff still goes down well. At the same time the club audience is
very varying. Sometimes there are a lot of Depeche Mode fans, but if it's a
regular club, where I'm spinning as a guest-DJ, there's the regular
audience. They don't come just because of me. Of course, Depeche Mode has
still a big name.

Strange occurrences

Sometimes it's really bizarre: When I spin, people go crazy as if it's a
concert, although I'm alone without Martin Gore, Dave Gahan.
That's quite strange: All I do is spinning records and the people are
staring at me really. Sometimes I'm not sure at all what to do.

But after all that's the nice thing about DJing: I meet people, see a lot of
new things and get to know cities properly. That's the real life. With
Depeche there's always an entourage around us. We enter a city like Munich,
do our gig and after that we fly on straightaway. We're there again soon.
Martin Gore has written five, six new songs. We will go into the studio in
June to produce a new album.

In search of artists for my label, for me it's the song that counts - less
the style. A song has to touch you. I can't describe exactly why.

Loved melodies

I love melodies. Depeche Mode was a pioneering band in the electronic
sphere. Now anyone is able to compose at home at his PC these days. But it
just depends on how you use this instrument.

The guitar is ancient, no one will reinvent its sound, but still there's
good new guitar music. And I'm searching for that kind of good music for
Toast Hawaii really. The name of the label comes from a restaurant at our
studio in Berlin from the eighties by the way. Every day I've eaten Toast
Hawaii there. It must be a German speciality; I haven't seen it anywhere
else."
